Previous to tho New Zealand Exhibition bein^ opened in Wellington, A)r. \V. Irwiu Grayling was requested by tbe Mayor ami Bcvough Council lo write a treatise on tbe resources of Tatunnki. Thia when completed was aent to We-l-lington, the intention beiug co issue it with similar treatises o£ Ihe olher districts in the descriptive cntaloguo of the Exhibition. The committee in Wellington, however, abandoned tho project, and Mr. Grayling had his manuscript returned to him. lie has now issued his paper in a pamphlet form, a copy of which has been forwarded lo us. Mr. Grayling deals with tho subject iv a liberal manner, and no part of iho district can be said to have been loft unnoticed by him. Ho describes the situation of tho Taranaki district; and Bhows Ihat notwithstanding tho many drawbacks the place has sustained, the place is progressing rapidly. Ue refers to the state of education and thrift o£ its people; aiid points out that those who have settled in the district have from industry and business tact established comfortable homes for themselves, " with nn estate as an heirloom for their family." Mr. Grayling describes tho various industries in the place, and also refers to tho New Plymouth Gas Works, the Waterworks, and the breakwater as instances of the enterprise of thepublicasacommunity. He refers to Haweni aud Patfca as settlements of recent date, but which have progressed during the last few years with extraordinary rapidity. Mr. Grayling does Hot neglect to refer to our mountain, eulogising it as " the beautiful Egmont with ita^ snow-capped cone." He also dwells at some length on the health of the climate, giving Dr. Leatham's authority for saying that during five years there were no endemic diseases in the district, no miasmatic influence, no infectious fever." The brochure contains a quantity of useful information carefully compiled, and as it has been printed on tbin paper in order to reduce the cost o£ postage, we should imagine a large Dumber will be despatched to persons at Home, Copies are on sale at all the booksellers, or may bo obtained nf the author, Eg-nont Village.
