THE HARBOUR LOAN BILL.
RKFEntUNQ to Colonel Trimble and Mr, Husthouso wasting the time of tho Houso in trying to kill our Harbour Loan Bill, tho Ly Mellon Times Wellington Correspondent writos :— "'The private Members' day was reir.arkable for more than the usual waste of time. Three-fourths of the afternoon sitting was wasted over the Taranaki ILirbour Bill, and nearly all night was swallowed up by Mr. M'Millun's Dog Registration Bill. Tho reasons for tho shelving of the iirst I have sent you. It is worth remembering, in addition, that Mr. Hursthouse, who practically talked tho Bill out, represented himself as aoting at the request of a vory largo number of settlers, inhabitants of a country ho had 1 known for forty years and more. Tho " forty yeais and more" are more precious to Mr. Hursthouso thin they are to the public ; but what the public is likely to see in the speeches of both Colonel Trimble and Mr. Hursthouse, ia a growing disliko on the part of lurgc districts to discount their future by means of a local rating power. There is a feeling among members that Turauaki is in an exceptional position, as the breakwater promises to be tho oa\y harbour of refuge on the West Coast. In their view it is something of a national question, growing in importance with tho growing importance of New Zealand.
With a view to greatly rcduco stock and at the eamo lirao enable the public to procuro good furniture, carpets, pianos, &c., during the dull times, J. C. Georgo will oli'er tho whole o£ his slock at a small advance on co^t, at the old premises, corner of Devon and Liardct-streets.-ADV.
