OPUNAKE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the School Committee was held on Tuesday, 6th July, 1886. Present: Messrs. Pettigrew (in tho chair), McLood, Breach, Young, PenDington, and Moore. Tenders for cleaning the school in accordance with tho Board's specification were read, and that of Mrs." Collins at £2 19s. 6d. per quarter was accepted. Mr. Ehvin, as ono of the deputation who waited on tho architect about alterations, and Mr. Scott, the builder, sont to Opunake to do the work, were present by invitation. Tho chairman reported what business had been done with regard to repairs, read letters and telegrams which had passed on tho matter, and related nil that had transpired with regard to getting the work put in hand from the beginning. Mr. Scottexplained what works were authorised, and how ho intended to carry them out. The deputation, which had gone to New Plymouth, also explained how they had been received, and that there appeared every desire to meet the views of the Committee on the part of the Board and architect. The Committee discussed tho matter very fully, the opinion being expressed that had the Board consulted the Committee officially, there would be little to complain of. Tho matter merged into tho, question of the relative position of tho Committees as to the Board. It was Btatcd that there was now an. amount of work being done by outsiders, with Government money, in the town which would have been done cheaper by local men had it been tendered for. Tho main matter, viz., the supplementing the Board's vote bo as to extend tho porch to form a class room, waß eventually reached, but it was considered better to leave tho matter as it stood, as there are at this time many calls on tho people, and the room was not urgently required. Mr. Scott guaranteed that the work he waa doing would make a thoroughly substantial job of the present building. The following resolution was carried : " That tho Committee refrain from expressing aa opinicn on the matter until after the next meeting of the Board." Two members dissented on tho ground that either tho Commits had reasons for censuring tho Board's action or they had not, in either case a. definite resolution should be adapted.
