Auckland, April IG. There are 130 men now engaged at the harbour defences. Some of the guns have beeu dragged up to tho batteries to-day. TURNING FIRST SOD OF RAILWAY. The first sod of the Main Trunk Kailway was turned at Te Awamutu yesterday. Wahanui cut the sod and the Premier -wheeled the barrow. Speeches were made by Wahanui, Taonui, Rewi, aud other well-known chiefs, and also by the Premier. COTTAGE BURNT. Giibistchurch, April IG. A four-roomed cottage, owned by R. B. Robertson, was burnt down last night. Insurance £300, in the United. END OF A DISPUTED LAND CASE. Dunedin, April 16. At the Supreme Court, in the case of Murray v. Brown, for trespass, wrongful sale, and assault, the jury returned a verdict of £300 damages.
