NEW BUILDING FOR THE NATIONAL BANK.

The National Bank of New Zealand has commenced the erection of new banking premises at the corner of Devon and Brougham-streets. The area of the building is 38 feet x 43 feet 6 inches, nnd the height above the street 34 feet. The entrance is from the corner. The bank will only occupy the ground floor at present, the upper one being divided into suites of offices, with two strong rooms, and separate entrance from Broughamstreet, which have been leased by Mr. Samuel. The rooms however are so arranged that they can at once be turned into a manager's residence when required. The bank office faces both streets, and iB 21 feet 6 inches x 34 feet, and 14 feet high. In connection with it is a large strong room of concrete. Next this office is the manager's room — 15 feet xlB feet, with entrance both from the public and private portions of the office. Off it is also ,v passage leading to the lavatory, &c, and back entrance, and to r two_bedroqrus adjoining it, with bath-room, lavatory, &c. These will be occupied by some of tho officials.

The upper floor contains eight officesand two strong rooms, also lavutdry and other conveniences. . The building generally is to be of wood, plastered inside, and with slate roof, and linished throughout in the most substantial manner. The strong rooms, foundations for same, and for chimneys are to be of concrete, and all these have to be brought up froni a considerable dept owing to the site having been filled in.

The fronts-are designed in the best style ot Italian street architecture, and, being exceedingly well proportioned, ought to look well, and have a substantial and banklike appearance. The architect is Mr. D. Ross, F.R1.8., of Auckland, and the contractor Mr. James A. Johnston of Wanganui. The architect's estimate for the building complete was £2000, and as the contract price is £1740, exclusive of fittings only, a considerable sum may be allowed for these, and still the whole will be within the limit. The building which is expected to be completed iv about five months, will be under the superintendence of Mr. Sanderson.
