PICNIC AND BALL AT WAITARA.

[from oub waitaba cobbespondent.] The most enjoyable picnic we have had for some time at Waitara came off on Monday last, and was held at a beautiful spot on the banks of the Waitara, River, known as the " Karakas." Tho property is owned by Messrs. Elliot and Bayly, and was kindly placed ut tho disposal of the Committee for the picnic. The residents of Waitara and the surrounding district have for some time past been anxious to show their appreciation of the services of the " Waitara Brass Band," and the picnic was got up in aid of the baud fund, the proceeds being handed over to the treasurer. This was all that could be desired, and after the town had been enlivened by the band playing selections from " Maritana," " Norma," &c, a start was made for the grounds, where the Company assembled about one o'clock. The usual amusements engaged in by young people were then started, and kept up with considerable spirit, the band playing, at intervals, lively airs. About four o'clock, tea and refreshments were provided, and the tables were covered with all the delicacies that can be conceived. The following ladies presided : — Mrs. and Misses Bayly, Mesdumes Day, Tatton, Dugdale, Thomson, Buckle, Townsend, Lawrence, Pearce, and Thomas.

The good things having been done ample justice to by all present, tho party, after a most enjoyable day, returned to town and finished the event by a dunce in the evening, in Pennington's Hall ; where upwards of two hundred assembled. Dancing was kept up until an early hour on Tuesday morning, when everyone returned home thoroughly satisfied with their day's pleasure. The thanks of the community ;ire due to the ladies who so kindly contributed the comestibles and presided at the tables ; and the greatest satisfaction was felt by all present at the progress made by the " Waitara Brass Band," which is owing to the pains taken by their leader, Mr. Hughes, of New Plymouth.
