THE EAST WARD ELECTION.
TO TJIE EDITOR,
Sir, — I have now before me the handbill issued to the ratepayers previous to election of the late elected Town Councillor for the Central Ward, in which the candidate states that "he is not a representative of tho Jockey Club, and would use his best endeavours to forward their interests." I now ask him in what way can he reconcile those promises with his conduct at tho last meeting of the Borough Council, as mobt ratepayers consider that his actions were calculated to defraud them of what beyond all question is their moral right. I now ask certain members of the Jockey Clvb — do they hope to succeed in their iniquitous claim of: a right of property in the Reserve known as the Racecourse by putting forward men who are capable of making any promises favourable to tho ratepayers previous to tho election, and falsifying them when elected. 1 hopo that what occurred at tho last Borough Council meeting will have taken out tho dust which has been so freely thrown into tho ratepayers' eyes of late ; and that at the poll for a Councillor for the East Ward on Monday next, tho electors will reject the candidate which is covertly supported by a section of the Jockey Club for they dare not do it openly. I hope they will go straight for the candidate which served tho Borough faithfully before, and can be relied on to do so again. — I am, &c, Ratepayer. New Plymouth, October G, 1883.
