PROPOSED ALTERATIONS TO THE HOSPITAL.

The Hospital Board have made an effort to induce the Government to consent to the necessary expenditure for ceitain much-needed alterations and repairs to the Hospital, and we are glad to observe from the last communication received from Wellington that the Government are disposed to grant the application. As such a matter must necobaarily interest the public, we give a few particulars of the proposed j improvements. The accident ward will be enlarged to 25 feet x 17 feet, which is about double its present size. The male ward (51 feet x 18 feet) will remain unaltered ; and so will the bath-room and lavatory. The present surgery is to be made an orderly-room, it being altogether unfit for a surgery. In the west wing, the room now used by the Steward as a parlor, will be converted into a surgery. Several small rooms now used for linen closets, etc., will be made into one room, which will be used as a kitchen, where a good cooking range, with hot and cold water supply, will be found. One or two small rooms will be re-arranged, and made into a female ward (30 feet x 15 feet). A cottage for the use of the Steward will be erected a abort distance from the Hospital; also, a laundry, so that, under the proposed arrangements, the Steward's quarters will not be in the Hospital building. The more effective drainage of the Hospital will be attended to, which, together wit'i the cost for laying on a hot and cold water supply throughout the building, will be a considerable item. We hope the Government will at once sanction the expenditure when the plans reach Wellington, as it is a matter of urgent necessity for the welfare of the district. We think the Hospital Board and Dr. O'Carroll, the Surgeon, are entitled to credit for having taken the matter in hand, and representing the case to the Government in its true aspect.
