[per press association.] CHARGE OF FORGERY. Wellington, October 1. A young in an named. James Hammond, engaged as a clerk in Messrs. W. and G. Tumbull and Co.'s store, has been arrested on a charge of forging the signature of Nicholas Reid, the manager of the firm, to a cheque for £20. OFF TO KAWHIA. The Government steamer Hinemoa left this afternoon for Kawhia with a detachment of Armed Constabulary. She calls at Opunake in the morning for the purpose of taking on board a number of A.C.'s from there. A SALVAI'IONISTIO ROW. Tijiaku, October 1. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, Smith, of tlie Salvation Army, and T. Graham, tailor, a JJreethought orator, were charged with committing a breach of the peace iv the Market reserve on Sunday afternoon. Graham, having mounted the wagon used by, tho other party as a pulpit, was haranguing the crowd on " morality," when. the Salvation Army approached, and. a contention arose between tho twodefendants as to the possession oT^th© wagon, culminating in Smith hurling Graham down repeatedly. Evidence was heard on both sides, affording considerable amusement to the dense crowd that thronged the Court. The Bench inflicted a fine of £1 and costs on each defendant. AM 11US01BLE EDIIOB, Dunedin, October 1. <• As Mr. Ashcroft, the late editor of the Times, was leaving tho Post-office on Saturday, he referred to a remark made by Mr. Smith, a solictor, to a friend, of an insulting nature, and asked Smith to repeat it. Smith did so, and Ashcroft struck him with a stick he was carrying. Smith's friends interfered, and prevented the matter going further.
