SMELTING TARANAKI IRON SAND.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — We, the undersigned, wish to bear testimony that Mr. E. M. Smith did take two small balls of his patent compound, place it on the common forge fire among the green coal, started the fire by blowing, and within a few minutes the compound commenced to run fluid. Within ten minutes the whole was smelted. He then took a small shovel, turned back the coal, and we then saw the whole of the said compound a boiling, fluid mass, having sunk below the tier. After this had been left to set and get cold, it was lifted out ; then pure globules were seen, well formed. Some of the said metal was taken and placed on an anvil, flattened ont cold, and drawn out as fine as gold leaf. If this simple operation was performed in the presence of any sceptic it must convince him that the iron sand can be smelted, without doubt or difficulty. We shonld recommend those shareholders who have never seen the sand smelted to get Mr. Smith to repeat the simple operation. By so doing it will remove all doubts as to the practicability of the Taranaki iron sand being smelted in a simple manner.— We are, &c, D. Lambert, J. A. Clark, George Leech, Henry Williams.
