HOSPITAL BOARD.

■The Ilospital Board met on Monday. Present: His Worship the Mayor (ehairman)j Yen. Archdeacon Govett, Messrs. Davidson and Parris. • MrrHiWs Claim.—A. letter was-reccived from Mr. Ilillj requesting payment of bis claim of £55 against the' Board. —The Secretary was instructed to acknowledge the receipt of tho letter. Colonial Surgeon's Letter. —A communication was received from Dr. O'Carroll, Hospital Surgeon, on the following subjects :—(1): —(1) Is' it the intention of the Board to admit patients having chronic diseases to the Hospital, who are likely to remain for a long time '? If so, it would be necessary to have a chronic ward, and a larger expenditure would be required by increasing the staff and obtaining extra furniture, etc,, (2) Are children • who are not ill, tp be admitted with their parents ? (.'5) Are patients from Patea and Hawera to be admitted ? Dr. -O'Carroll drew the attention of the <Board to tho efficiency and popularity ofe the Hospitiil, and also stated that there had been fewer deaths lasj; year than during any of the five previous years. The Hospital' had been worked on as economical a' 1 principle as was consistent with efficiency, and the steward, matron, arid wardsman gave him (the doctor) entire satisfaction. Dr. O'Carroll concluded by thanking the members of the medical profession in New Plymouth for their kind and valuable assistance when required, and suggested that they be appointed honorary surgeons ' to the hospital.—(l). The Board decided that chronic cases were not to be admitted into the hos.pital. (2). That the Governors have disi cretion to admit' children who are not ill intb the hospital'with their parents. IFaweraDistrict. —A letter was read from th(j Chairman of the Ilawera County Council asking on'what terms patients from the lla,wera District would be admitted to the New Ply month Hospital.—Mr. Parris proj posed and .Captain Davidson seconded, "That the Board -will admit patients from the District of Hawera into the New. Plymouth Hospital, on the written ordor of the, Hawera County Chairman, at the rate of :6s. per diem, including medical comforj;s. v '—Carried: ' ' • '' Benefit Societies. —- Captain Davidson moved, and th 6 Yen. 'A'rchdehcon Govett seconded, " That members o£ Benefit Societies only be admitted to the Hospital on tho request of the lodge to which they belong, together with guarantee of payment." —Carried. ' i Yisit'uu/ Governor. — Captain Davidson j was appointed Visiting Governor for the niojnth. ' - Jl Wooden Leg. —Some discussion ensued in reference to a case where a leg had been amputated, as to whether the Board should bear the cost of a wooden leg for the patient. No definite decision, however, ,waX arrived at. Accounts. —Accounts amounting to £102 were passed for payment.
