LAND BOARD.
The Land Board met on Monday. Present : The Chief Commissioner (in the chair), Messrs. Crompton, Kelly, Standish, and Syme.
Extension of Time.— The application of Mrs. Thomas for an extension of time for payment of instalment due upon the section held in the. name of her late husband, was again considere I. Mr. Crompton,as agent for the Public Trustee, madeasimilarapplication.-It was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Kelly, seconded by Mr. Standish, ■' That with reference to the applical ion of Mrs. Thomas, as it appears that J ames Thomas died intestate, three months extension of time be allowed to the Public Trustee to dispose of the selector's interest in the section.
Grouping of Sections. — A notification from the Under-Secretary of Crown Lands was read, which stated that His Excellency the Governor had approved of the grouping together of the following sections in the Ngaire District :— 7 and 8, block 3 ;5S and 59, block 6 ; 32 and 33, blook 5 ; 3, 8, 9, and 15, block 6; 36 and 37, block 10 ; 47, 48, and 49, block 10
Transfer — The transfer of section 19, block 14, Huiroa. from Edward Howell to Joseph Upton Davics, was granted.
Forfeited Sections — Several defaulters in conditions of their licenses having been reported to the Board, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. STANDISH, seconded by Mr. Crompton, "That the Hanger be requested to re-enter the undermentioned sections in the Ngaire District, on behalf of the Board :— Section 43, block 6, held by T. Twigg ; section 60, block 1, held by Agnes Mclntosh ; section 51. block 6, held by D. M. Parker ; section 18, block 6, held by Charles Rogal ; section 9, block 3, held by James Baiie ; sections 4 and 8. block 7, held by Peter Ste-vart ; section 58. block 1, held by J. and F. Simmons ; section 128, block 2, held by Clarke and Burkett; section 68, block 1, held by G. Davidson." This concluded the business.
The Waimate Plains valuation roll shows the names of 300 persons liable to be rated.
Manaia township and district can furnish over 80 children of school age, and steps are being taken towards obtaining a school.
Mr. Henry Clapcott has transferred his services from the Government Life Assurance Department to the Australian Mutual Provident Society.
We understand that Mr. Parris intends shortly to visit tho Mokau District for the purpose of pointing out to the natives the boundary of the confiscated land, and generally to negotiate matters in connection with opening up of the Mokau block. Advice was received this morning of the shipment by the Fernglen. from London, of a box of books for the Taranaki Book Club* The books are from Mudie's library, and from the invoice which has been shown us, they are an admirable selection, including most of the latest novels. The Government steamer Stella arrived in the roadstead this morning, for Hokitika, with thirty-eight natives prisoners who were landed and liberated here at 8 a.m. The natives proceeded to the Native Office, and received the injunctions of Mr. Parris, Civil Commissioner. They then marched in a body to Parihaka, leaving town at about 9.30 a.m. The Commissioner of Crown Lands held a sale by auction yesterday, at the Crown Lands Office, when two sections in the Warea District were offered to competition. The bidding was animated, and the sections went considerably above the upset price. Section 57, block 8, containing 4 acres 1 rood, at the upset price of £5 per acre, was sold to Mr. Hall for £9 per acre ; and section 59, containing 4 acres, was also purchased by Mr Hall for £7 ss. per acre. The celebrated tragedian Herr Bandmann, with the beautiful and highly gifced young American actress, Miss Louise Beaudet, will commence a season in New Plymouth on Monday week. Herr Bandmann brings with him a first-class dramatic company, specially selected in Australia, including Mr. James F, Cathcart (the late Mrs. DarreH's brother), who for ten years was leading actor with the Keans and Barry Sullivan. The company includes the following gentlemen : Messrs. Alfred Tasman, R. Jennings, E. Ejton, J. Musgrove, J. H. Nunn, J. Coatello, George Ward, E. T. Rigby, and W. Robson ; the lady performers being Mrs. Louisa Crawford, Miss Lottie Chambers, and Miss Ashtou,
