RAILWAY APPOINTMENTS.
The appointments of Joseph Prime Maxwell to be General Manager of tho New Zealand Railways, and of William Moyatt Haunay to be Assistant General Manager, are gazetted. Tbe appointments date from tbe 12th October. EARTHQUAKE WORK. Duxedin, October 14. Captain Thomson, harbour-master, in reporting to tho Harbour Board today, stated that there was an earthquake wave on the 7th instant at tho heads, and the water is said to have risen 18 inches. PROPOSED RECIPROCITY Wiril AMERICA. A Committee of tho Chamber of Commerce at their meeting this afternoon adopted a petition to the President and Congress of the United States, asking for such a restriction on the duty on imported goods as would foster an increased commercial interest between that country and the Australian Colonies.
