EDUCATION BOARD.

The Education Board met on Monday. Present: Mr. B. Wells (chairman), Yen. Archdeacon Govett, Messrs. Andrews, Bayly, Faull, Lawrence, Symc, and Ycale. Building Fund — The CHAIRMAN reported that the Board had received the sum <nf £700 from the Government for building purposes. Illness of Tejchrr. — The illness of Mrs. Hogarth, teacher under the Board, was also announced. Architect's Report. — The Architect reported , that the fence at the Kent Road school had [ been completed in a satisfactory manner : that forms a^d desks had been sent to tli3 Midhirst and Stratford schools. Girls' School. — Mr. Symis moved, and Mr. , Faull seconded, '• That tenders be called for '. the erection and painting of fences, and \ gravelling the site of the Girls' School, . Courtenay-street. No. 0 Wallace Place — A letter was read from Mr. A. Standish, agreeing to purchase section No. 0, Wallace Place, for the sum of ' £lUO. I No. 3 Committee. — A communication was s received from No. 3 Committee asking for the \ sanction of the Board to the placing of a new L cover on the well, and repairing the windows t at the West School ; calling the attention of : the Board to the dangerous and dilapidated \ state of the teacher's residence at the West ' School, and recommending that the house be sold ; notifying that a holiday had been ( granted to the schools on Tuesday, the Ist instant, in consequence of the representation of \ the teachers that an inconvenience would arise in the preparation of the school returns if a holiday were not granted. — The Board sanctioned the repairs asked for by the Committee, on the understanding that the cost woul'? be deducted out of the allowance made to the Committee. The Board also sanctioned the action of the Committee in allowing a holiday for the schools, but informed the 1 Committee that for the future it would not permit any departure from the rules laid clown with reference to the granting of holidays. Scale of Salaries. — An application was received from the Board of Education at Wanganui, requesting to be furnished with a copy of the scale of salaries authorised by the New Plymouth Board. — The Secretary was instructed to furnish the required information. Teacher's Residence. — An application was received from Mi&s Brooking, requesting to be allowed to occupy, sis a teacher's residence, the house lately occupicl by Mr. Yo:i Rotter. — A committee was appointed, consisting of the Chairman, and Messrs. Andrews and Faull, to inspect and report upon the house in question. Onvatti School. — A letter was received from Inspector Bullen with reference to the complaint made by the Board that the school at Omata had been injured by some malicious persons. Mr. Bullen recommended that a reward should be offered for the detection of the offenders. — On the motion of Archdeacon Govett it was agreed that a reward of £5 should be offered for such information as would lead to the conviction of the offenders. School Requisites. — Requisitions were received from various schools for books, maps, etc., which were granted. Tenders. — The following tenders were received for sujjplying dual desks and seats :—: — Desks. Wall seats, s. d. s. d. G. Hail 12 0 10 F. Progress Payments. — Mr. Faull asked leave to withdraw the notice of motion standing in his name re progress payments. — Granted. Secretary's Duties.— for. Andrews brought forward a notice of motion standing in his name to the effect that the duties of the Secretary to the Board be consideied, with a view to defining the same.— Mr. Yeale pointed out that the duties of the Secretary were defined under the Act, and Mr. Andrews, therefore, withdrew his notice of motion. Notices of Motion. — Mr. Faull to move at the next sitting of the Board, ''That work let on contract above £50 be paid at the rate of 7.~> per cent on the value of work done ; that salaries of teachers be paid quarterly, after the quarterly returns have been sent in duly certified : that members' travelling expenses be for the number of attendances during the quarter ; and that all accounts be sent in not later than the Wednesday preceding each meeting of the Board.'
