IMPORTANT DECISION.

Tauranga, August 30.

An important case of selling spirits to a native in the out-lyiag- district.9 was heard at Ohinerautu under the Act of 1879. Inspector Hlmerson conducted the case, aud proved that Ftijj. ley, a storekeeper, at Tauran^a, sold the natives fifteen gallons of rum to be delivered at Ohinemntu. The Magistrate gave the decision in favour of the defendant, upon the grounds that the rum was not purchased at Tauranga, Tauraoga not being an out-lying district, and Rigley, as carrier, was not liable. It is now understood by the natives tbat they can purchase spirits in any town in the North Island, and have it delivered in out-lying districts io any quantity. Inspector Emerson intends next licensing meeting to object to all wholesale licenses in the Tauranga District in ODnseqnence of the late decision.
