THE NEW ZEALAND HERALD'S TELEGRAM.
The Nmu Zealand Herald, referring* to a telegram sent from here, and which Mr. Courtney referred to at the meeting on Monday, says — " fn a telegram published in our colntnns a few days ago a statement was made to tho effect that political feeling had been to some extent imported into the proceedings at New Plymouth. One of the speakers at yesterday's meeting quite needlessly referred to the statement as a " lie." We feel quite certain that the sender of the telegram believed the statement to be true, aud Mr. Courtney cannot know to tbe contrary, so that his statement is, as we prefer to put it, a mistake. However, we wish to have no dispute about sucb a matter at the present time. Through the influence of Major Atkinson aud others, the present Ministry have many bitter opponents in Taranaki ; but we will presume that none of them will endeavour to make mere political capital out of recent occurrences."
Our contemporary should be careful how it inserts telegrams coming from parties who are so politically biased that they are not particular as to what they say of their opponents. Unfortunately the parties themselves cam ot see how much they damage their own cause by sending such messages.
