GOLD SPECIMEN FOR SYDNEY EXHIBITION. Auckland, May 27. The Thames goldfields sends a haudBorne collection of specimens and mineral exhibits to the Sydney Exhibition. STEALING A BANK BOOK. After Sergoaut-Mnjor Tolly's death, so:ne persons t*ot hold of his bank book, which showed £33 to his credit. Two men, named Thomas Inghatn and Thomas Mulvany, presented themselves at the Bank where the money was lodged, and after certain preliminaries one of them presented a cheque for £18. He had no wish, he said, to draw the whole of his money. The Bank clerk, however, was wide awake ; he knew of the death of lolly, and sent information to the police before they were aware of the oause of the delay. Both men were taken into custody on a charge of stealing securities to the amount of £33. Ingham and Mulvanty were remanded till Saturday. They were fel-low-lodgers of Tolly's. TABLES TURNED. Two men, named Dunn and Thompson, of Karakaraki, were charged, on the information of John Reofer, with burning down the Rev. W. Barton's house on the 12th April. The prisoners were acquitted, and the informant committed for perjury. BENEVOLENT. The Cambridge Cavalry Corps have voted the widow of the late SergeantMajor Eraser with £GO. HACE HORSE KILLED. ThoTuihikaramea race horse, Master, was killed, at Cambridge. It was ridden by a Maori when he bolted, and ran into a dray, driving tho shaft eighteen inches into his breast. He fell dead. L'he shock pent the dray and horse over a cutting near. Neither the horse, driver, nor Master's rider were hurt. METHODIST TEMPERANCE ALLIANCE. A meeting has been hold to endeavour to form a Methodist Temperance Society according to the rules of the conference of 1879. WAIL STEAMERS. Arrived : Zealandia and Etotorua. SCHOONER ASHORE. Intelligence has been received that the schooner Norval is ashore at Toluga Bay, on tho East Coast. She is insured in tho New Zealand and the National Companies for £1000. STUD COMPANY. An Auckland Stud' Company has been formed. Tho object is to breed for annual sale fashionable and esteemed thoroughbreds. They have bought

stock, and have purchased Messrs. McLean and Goss's and Major Walmsley's thoroughbred stock, inc'uding the celebrated horse Musket, for which £2500 was offered by an Australian breeder. They have also purchased Messrs. T. and S. Morriu's draught stock, including the Cl3 r de;dale draught entire Elgin, costing £1000. landed in Auckland. The company have secured Messrs. Morriu's Glen Orchard Instate, and have appointed Major Walmsley Resident Manager. ROBBING THE MARKET. Three larrikins-— Peter Harrio, John Boyle, and William Hoggard — broke into the Auckland Market last night by a trap-door, and stole a quantity of goods. Their ages ranged from about fifteen years. They were sentenced to four days' imprisonment. SAILED WITH THE MAIL. The s.s. Zealandia has sailed for San Francisco with 78 passengers. FATHER HENNEBERY GONE TO AMERICA. Father Hennebery was a passenger by the Zealandia. FOOT RACING. It is stated thaij Mr. J. O'Connor, of Tinaru, who beat Brown in the mile race on Saturday last, is willing to run Mr. Hutton, of Auckland, three distances — viz , 440, 700, and 880 yards. ACCIDENT TO A M.L C. An accident occurred on board the Rotorua, when running' from Napier to Gisborne, the sufferer being the Hon. James Patterson, M.fj.C, who was on a trip to the Waiwera. The gentleman was sitting at the head of the table, when the steamer gave a sudden lurch, which precipitated him over on to his back, his head coming into violent contact with the floor, causing a nasty scalp wound, and copious effusion of blood. LARGE CUTTLE FISH. Wellington, May 27. A large cuttle fish, with teu arms, and ten feet across, was washed ashore near here. Professor Kirk has propared its skeleton for the Museum. DEAD BODY FOUND. The body found at Island Bay has been identified as that of John Dutch. It appears that Dutch left his house in Brougham-street in the morning, saying that he was going for a walk over the hill, but never returned, and his body was found between 10 and 11 o'clock. A few yards away there was picked up on the beach a little money, and a carpenter's rule. Deceased was a carpenter, and leaves a wife and four children He had been in Wellington about two years, and was usually of a lively disposition. MAYORALTY ELECTION. There has been really very little excitement over the Mayoralty contest. To-day Hutchison appeared the favourite. The result of the polling was — Hutchison 699, Hunter 66±. Majority for Hutchison, 35. APPEAL COURT. At the Appeal Court, Mr. Fitzgerald, counsel for Williams, who was convicted for embezzlement, raised a point whether the direction of the judge was right. The judges upheld the decision of the Supreme Court. ANOTHER FAILURE. W. S. Falconer, cabinet-maker, has made a deed of assignment. PERJURY. The Appeal Court has been occupied all day over the case, Kawitini v. Kin. ross — a charge of perjury against Mr. Kinross, of Napier. It was further adjourned till Saturday. SCHOONER WRECKED. The schooner Shepherdess was wrecked at Kaikoura last night, during au easterly galo. She parted with her moorings, and drifted on to the rocks. The insurance lapsed on Monday, and the company refused to renew it, as the vessel was at sea. The owners — lessrs. Pender — estimate their loss at £450. CHARGE OF ARSON. CiiRisrcHURCH, May 27. Lewis Leslie, whose fruit shop was burnt, has been arrested on a charge of arson. The evidence is strong. The stock was insured for £300 in the New Zealand. It is not known whether the premises were insured. LATE ACCIDENT AT O AMARU. O amaru, May 27. Mr. White, father of Miss White, who was killed by the trap accident, is in a very bad state. BREACH OF PROMISE OF MARRIAGE. Dunedin, May 27. A breach of promise case, in which the gentleman is the plaintiff, is talked of here. SLY GROG SELLING. Mr. and Mrs. Reed have been sent to gnol for default of payment of fine for sly grog selliug.
