Mr. Uncles, who has been proprietor of the Imperial Hotel for the last eight years, has disposed of his interests to Mr. Kenny, who is now in possession. At a meeting of the Taranaki Institute Committee held yesterday, it was resolved to call a general meeting of members with a yicw to winding up the Institute and forming a Book Club, The Egmont Quadrille party held the first union of the season in the Freemasons' Hall last evening, and in every way the inauguration was a pleasant one. A large number assembled, and the enjoyment was general. The shooting season for game commences on Thursday, the Ist proximo, and sportsmen should have a good time of it, as pheasants appear to be plentiful skirting the suburbs. Licenses arc issued by Mr. Richmond, Secretary to the Acclimatisation Society, and we believe that a strict look-oufc will be kept by rangers for poachers. Ifc may also be worth while pointing out that while owners of property may shoot upon their own land without having a license, it is necessary to take one out if they intend to sell thegame. The following is a copy of a communication receive'! yesterday by Mr. E, M. Smith :—: — | " Public Works Office, Wellington, April 24, 1879. Memorandum for Mr. Smith, New i Plymouth, ironfoundcr. — Referring to our interview the other day, directions have been given to the Public Works Department to forward to you drawings showing the exact I size and pattern of the railway wheels which it is proposed shall be cast chilled from the Taranaki irod sand, b}- way of experiment. Before you actually commence the work, however, and with a view to prevent subsequent misunderstandings, I have to request that you will be good enough to submit for approval the maximum price which the Government will have to pay for (say) four pairs of wheels. — J.
