CANTERBURY.
Christchurch, April 15. An attempt to carry water from the River Avon into the centre of the city for fire extinction purposes has failed. Pipes twelve inches in diameter were used, but the quantity of water obtained from the river was so small that one steam fire engine bottomed the well in ten minutes. The Council had the pipes laid contrary to the advice of the City Surveyor, and about £300 has thus been thrown away. At caucus held last night, Sir Cracroft Wilson received promises from members of Provincial Council of very liberal support, and ho \v\U be able to command a working majority—W. J. Williams, W. W. Maskell, and H. R. Webb. At mectiug of Council to-night it is expected that a fortnight's adjournment will be applied for, to enable new government to frame a policy and study financial affairs. Mr. Montgomery and the other members of the Provincial Executive sent iv their resignations to the Superintendent, in consequence of the rejection of the Municipal Corporation Revenue Bill. There is talk of forming a new Cfoverumout. Offers have beeu made to several gentlemen, without success.
