SOCIETY TO PROMOTE THE INTEREST OF TARANAKI.
A largely attend"*! meeting of the above Society was hold in tho Taranaki Institute, on Monday evening last. Mr. Cromptou was voted to the chair. The minutes of tho preliminary meeting were read and confirmed, and the Secretary, at tho request of those presont, read over tho names of the members who had enrolled themselves, aud paid tho entrance fee, which consisted of over fifty names. Mr. Gi.edikll and Mr. Jackson seconded, " That Mr. Cromptou, and Mr. Weyergnng be Chairman, and Socretary for a qnarter from thi a date." Carried. Mr. Jackson proposed, and Mr. Yems seconded, " That five persons present, (including tho Chairman and Secretary) be a quorum authorised to transact business." Carried. Mr. Yems proposed, and Mr. Gledhill seconded " That any three members be empowered to call upon the Secretary to summon a meeting of the .members of the Society." Carried. ilr. Gledhill proposed, and Mr. Yems seconded, " That tho title of this Society be ' Tho Society for the Promotion, of the Interest of tho Province of Taranaki. "
Mr. Uo\KVFiri,n then proposed snd Mr Uivohn seconded " That a deputation wait upon His Honor tho Superintendent to-morrow (Tuesday) at 11 o'clock, to ascertain in what position tho Province stood with regard to the Confiscated Lnnd, and what prospect there is of this land beitic; handed over to tho Provinco for disposal or otherwise thrown open for selection. The deputation to consist of Messrs. Yems, Jackson, Callnj-hnu, and Dingle, and tho mover." Mr. Callagiun proposed and Mr. Gledhill seconded " That the Chairman and Secretary bo requested to communicate with Dr. Stratford in Auckland requesting him to give this Society all information with regard to tho emigration from Canada if a suitable block of land offered itself, and what ho would deem a suitable block of land for such emigrants." Carried. Mr. Gledhil proposed and Mr. Yems seconded " That tho Chairman in conjunction with the Secretary be requested to communicate with kindred societies." Carried. Mr. Ui'Jonv proposed, and Mr. Gledhilt. seconded, " That tho Chairman and Secretary bo requested to draw up a letter, a copy of which shall bo sent to each of tho members of this Province, requesting their views ou the following subjects : — ' Ou dealing with tho Coußscated Lands of Tarauaki,' ' On Elective Superintendent,' ' On tho Colonial Pension list,' 'On tho Reduction of Taxation, 1 and •On Native Affairs.' " Carried. Mr. Gledhill proposed, and Mr. Upjohn seconded, " That Messrs. Burns, and Wilson be requested to canvas the inhabitants of tho Provinco to become members, aud to receive their entrance fee of Is." Tho meeting then adjourned till Wednesday oveniDg, at 7 o'clock.
