TAURANGA.

The s ». Corio rsturned yesterday from Tauranga, 'and brings news for which we are indebted to Capt. Muirhead. of the hostile attitude of the natives 'there. The first recent intimation of their hostility was given on Saturday lisN It appears that Capt. •Jenkins and some of the officers of the Miranda were out wild duck shooting, when they were interfered with by some natives, who stated tliey^ would not allow them to shoot dncks on their land. , On the "Monday some of^the rebels sent in a written challenge 'to> Captain Jenkins, saying tbnt'they would be ready *to fight on Friday next, April 1. It is probable that it is only a fnolish boast, which they will not attempt, for their own sake*, to carry further. It was, nevertheless, considered expedient to have all the cattle driven in from the swamps, which was done on Monday last, the 28th. This, ■we should say, 'liowever, was done partly from the fact of numbers of the cattle J; being missing, having g"one probably to replenish the Commissariat -stores 6f the 1 rebels. Mr Baker the native interpreter 'had been Subsequently despatched to the head of' ' the'bay to have an interview with the rebels, but ' had not returned when the Corio left. There had #i heen ho change in the disposition of the troops. At /Tauranga a soldier of the name"of Gardiner had 'died of fever, and was buried last Sunday. Several officers came up in the Corio.— ,S. Cross, March 30. ' Tauranga.— We take the following from a pj-i v vate letter we have received from Tanranga : — " In "the last encounter between the Maketu natives and "*the Ngatiporos, there were , thiee of' the Maketu 'party killed and eleven wounded. On the Ngatipoio side twenty two were killed and 'thirty-two wounded, and amongst the number two of the Waifcatobes of Opotiki are killed. They are mostly all :gone back home again, with the intention of gelling •fresh support if required, and pretend that the last excursion was only to rescue the Ngatiporo party." — 76/rf, April 1.
