It appears that tbe English schemes for converting New Caledonia into a convict settlement, are now cut short in a way which never eulered into the heads of some of our economists. The French Admiral stationed in the Pacific lias formally taken possession of them in Ihe name of his Imperial, Master] and the first intimation tha Australian Colonists get of the event, is the arrival ol a chartered sbip. in the waters ol their principle Port, to obtain supplies for Louis Nopoleoo's new Naval station.
New Caledonia is not only the neareit Country to tbe Australian Coa»t, of the great Poliuesian group but it is tbe mott valuabl* tv the commerce of these sea, For some time palt it has been ex* clutiicly visited by English Shipping j and tome of tbe Sydney shipowners h<<va trading establishoieiits we believe, on the shores.
