MINING.

Cure. —A parcel of about ten tons of mullock, the casing of the hanging wall of the lode taken down for about eighteen inches from it, was crushed at (lie Golden Crown Battery, and the retorting took place yesterday morning. There was a little quartz through the mullock, which was the reason of its being tried. A result of eight pennyweights of gold to the ton was obtained from the parcel crushed, which we look on as satisfactory, and it certainly looks well for the nature of the run of gold in hand. Yankee Doodle. —A parcel of about seventy tons of stone, or a little over it, was crushed at the Missouri Battery, and the result is a very satisfactory one, amounting to fifty-eight ounces five pennyweights of gold. Yields equal to this will enable the manager to open up the ground by means of a low-level tunnel now going in, without making any calls on the shareholders. The stone coming out of the mine is still looking well, and in a short time crushing will again be started with the live-bead battery employed’by the company. Missouri.— A parcel of twenty-seven ounces eighteen pennyweights twelve grains of melted gold is to hand from tins company, the result of a crushing of a large parcel of rubbly surface stuff, put through at the company’s own battery, and which gave an average return of not quite five pennyweights to the ton. Even this small yield pays, as the battery belongs to themselves, and is driven by water power, so that scarcely any expense is attached to it, and the stone is very easily obtained in large quantities. Bendigo Independent.— The crushing going on for the tributersof this company at the Prince Alfred Battery is shaping well already for a good payable return, which, indeed, was fully expected from it. There is a large parcel, probably one hundred a id fifty tons, to go through, so that the return will not be to hand for some time. Grigs’s (Tookey) tribute party are also crushing at the Prince Alfred Alachine, and tiie stuff is shaping well for a good return. Manukau Battery. —Thirty head at this fine machine are now at work —ten on Nonpareil stone, ten on Kelly’s (Albion) tribute, five on Red, White, and Blue, and five on the Belfast (Albion) tribute. The Nonpareil stone is showing about the same as usual. Poverty and Charleston (Albion) Tribute. —The total value of the late yield from the crushing of thirty-five tons of stone amounts to the very handsome sum of £l,Oll 5s lid, which will he disbursed in the following manner The Albion Company receive 25 per cent., which amounts to £252 10s 5d ; £SO 11s 3d goes to the security fund, and the trihuters take £707 IBs 34 as their share of the transaction. This, we think, will fully serve to show the advantage of the tribute system, for had the company not let the ground in this way the probability is that the gold would have lain there for years to come, in place of being worked to the mutual advantage of trihuters and company. We might mention here that the last party who had tins tribute lost a good deal or money latterly, and finally abandoned the whole thing, the leader now being worked on being a recent find altogether. Some more good specimen stone was taken out of the again yesterday, and it keeps up its rich character.

Nonpareil.—A few more good specimens were yesterday taken out of the mine, and add to the value of the contents

of the company’s strong box.- No change worth reporting at. the mine or battery. Sailor’s Dream. —Another small parcel of specimens were taken out of the lode yesterday afternoon, showing heavy gold freely. They were brought down to town by the manager, who reports that the lode looks very well indeed, and he seems confident th-‘t he has a good thing in hand. Caledonian. —The new fan lias been started to work, and answers admirably. Some of the contractors nave made a rise, and obtained some powder from some place or other, and there are now men at work in the bottom of the new winze from the low level, aid also in the rise which is being put up from the,north-east drive to communicate with the winze down from the mid-level in that direction. The battery is, of course, still idle. Windsor Castle. —Everything about the mine having been put into good working order, crushing was commenced at Clarkson’s old battery, at the mouth of the drive, and the show is reported as being very satisfactory indeed. It is iuten(fed to keep the battery going for some time to come. Dauntless Tribute.-—A parcel of one hundred and ten pounds weight of specii':'i ns, which has been crushed for these tv hut ers, has given the good return of t k.ty- wo ounces seventeen pennyweights c ’ melted gold. This stone was taken : : rein a vein which is supposed to he identical with the old Dauntless vein, which was so profitably worked at one time. This was funnel to run into a large reef, and is thought to have cut right through it, and where now worked on is making towards the Sink to Rise, this being on the far side of the reef above mentioned. The company are entitled to 1)5 per cent, of the above return of gold. Multum in Pauyo.—On Monday morning a parcel of about forty pounds of specimens was taken out of the reef, which maintains its rich character. Tho crushing going on now looks very good indeed, and a return even richer than the last one is expected; over sixty tons will probably be put through. Lady* Bird Tribute.—A parcel of twelve ounces seven pennyweights twelve grains of gold was lodged yesterday on behalf of the tributers who are working tho l a !y Bird ground. North Pacific.—A crushing cf about twenty-eight tons of stone has been finished for this company at Weston’s Battery, and the return is a very good one, being forty ounces eleven pennyweights eighteen grains of mulled gold, or very nearly an ounce and a-luilf to the ton. Sons of Freedom.—A fine, parcel of about four hundredweight of picked stone was crushed yesterday, at Sou tor’s Battery, Waiotahi Creek, hut were not finished in time for retorting. A general clean-up and retorting will take place today, and a good return may be looked for.
