WAIKATO RAILWAY.
The hill above the bridge in Mechanics’ Bay, on the Waikato railway line, has at last been cut. t 'rough, notwithstanding the landslip that occurred, which retarded op ‘rations somewhat. The rails at the cuttings are now connected, and a party of men are employed in removing a portion of the earth on the upper side on which tlie landslip occurred.- The floor of tin; cutting here will lie made a little wider than it is, and a large quantity of earth on the bank removed, so that ns long a slope as possible will be given to this portion of the hank, to prevent the recurrence of a landslip in the future. Tlie oUJ yards or so of the tunnel to cut through will lie the hairier to rapid progress on this part of the line for some time, and we should tie glad to see otln-r sections of the line beyond Newmarket given out, so that- the opportunities of making - progress with the works might lie multiplied. Referring to the possibility of getting thu line to Onehmiga in working order, we may mention that.there are at present only seven miles of rails available. When a sufficiency is left to lay down for the purpose of facilitating the removal of earth, &e., as the works progress, a very short length of rails would bo available to connect Newmarket with Onehmiga. There it also but one locomotive here, and that will be required on this end of the line. Tlo-embankment in tlie Bay is rapidly stretching outwards, and the works of Mr Jones, at Point Brilomart, will soon begin to tell on the other side, so that a long time need not elapse'before a connection is made by the two ends of the embankment somewhere in the neighbourhood of the Wynyard Pier.— Cross.
