COROMANDEL.
Tin; Tokaiea Company cleaned tip at tbe New Zealand Battery on Monday, and retorted tbe gold yesterday. The result was 2850 z. as the return for nine days’ crushing a considerable improvement upon tha yield of a few weeks before. The battery is now idle, and will lie, I suppose, until a new arrangement is entered into between Mr Thomas and the Tokatca Company. The low level drive is going on slowly. The stone still continues extremely hard and tough, and defies even powder to blow it out. The men barely make a foot a day. They expect soon to be through this, and get into softer driving. About 3G feet have to be driven before reaching the leader, and when this is accomplished a stupe will In- at once commenced. Winz s are being pul down on the h ad r to meet the drive as it ndvatue s, and thus get this lev I into work with the least <h lay. The find at I lie head of Bald's Creek turns out in la* within the ground of the I'nniK I ('ompni.lt is in a very < 1 itli■ -' l ll place to get at io work, but the prospects aro
encouraging. The prospectors have gone to Auckland to try and make--arrange-ments to work theleadj ron tribute; The men have spent a good teal of time in making this discovery, and it. will be hard if llcy lose all, and get nothing for their trouble- - - —-
The new find on Alontgomerv’s land, behind the Court-house, is better than I at i first reported. The'specimens taken from near the surface are as rich as those taken from the Little Wonder, one of which was exhibited last year at the Herald office for a few days.; Tlie men are putting in a drive, and expect shortly to reach the leader, when they hope to get hold of something good. The Goleonda, one of the AYynynrdton claims, has Ig-en taking out some splendid stone, which is expected to yield nearly soz. to the ton, The expense of carting from this claim to a battery is so great that they have left off crushing. Rumour has it that a machine is to be elected between tiiis claim and the John Bull ; lint it is a pity that these things are talked of so long before they are begun. The Green Harp are still sinking on their winze, and the stone continues as good as ever. The stepes in tlie upper level are nearly all completed, and hy the time tlie New Zealand Company’s battery is finished this claim will furnish a regular and eoiitinuoussupply of crushing stuff. They have just taken out, from the bottom of the winze, some realty beautiful stone, which has been shown by th ■ manager to some of the shareholders in the township. The stone is getting better, as the winze gets deeper.—Correspondent D. S. Cross.
