Miss M. Bell, Christchurch, is the guest of her mother, Mrs K. Bell, Waihi School. Miss Brenmer and Miss E. Bremner left Temuka yesterday to spend a holiday in the North Island. Mr and Mrs J. Philp, Winchester, are leaving" for IChristchurch on Saturday next, where they will spend the Christmas holidays. Mr and Mrs L, H. Orbeli, Win-
cheater, are leaving this week for Akaroa, where they will be the guests of Mrs Orbell’s mother (Airs J. C. Buckland). Mr G. B. Orbeli, Winchester, accompanied by Mr Martin Dawson, Christchurch, intend to spend the holidays camping at Waikouaiti. Mr J. L. Stone-Wigg, Waihi School, intends to spend a part of his vacation in Australia. Mr J. E. M. Ball, Waihi School, left yesterday for' Christchurch. Mr John Philp, senr., leaves tomorrow on a visit to Palmerston North, where he will be the guest of his son, Mr W. Philp. Miss E. G. Goodson, who was the guest of her sister (Mrs H. J. C. Buck, Rangitata Island), has returned to her home at “Willow Glen,” Clandeboye. The friends o£ Mr George Thomson, Temuka, will he sorry to hear that he is suffering from a severe illness.
Mrs B. Thomson, Wilkin street, Temuka, has left for an extended holiday in Christchurch. Mr W. G. Paul, of Waimate, had the misfortune to break an arm whilst cranking a car. Miss Aspinall, of the Timaru Girls’ High School, is spending Christmas with Mrs A. R. Guild, “Strathearn,” Temuka. Miss Mary A. C. Pitts, a resident of Waimate, and a student of” Canterbury College, satisfied the examiners in subject English, stage 1, first 8.A.. for the B.A. examinations. Mr J. D. McKechnie, manager of the Geraldine branch of the Bank of New Zealand, left for his annual holiday on Tuesday. Hi'S' place is being taken during his absence by Mr H. F. Wilson, of the staff of the Dunedin branch of the Bank. Master Michael Ruane, of the Morvon Convent School, has been awarded the St. Bede’s College residential scholarship. Sir John Roberts, Mr G. K. Ritchie, and Mr S. K. Sleigh were passengers by the express for the north on Tuesday. They * were joined at Christchurch by Mr C. W. Rattray, and proceeded to Wellington by the ferry steamer. They will attend a meeting of directors of the Union S.S. Company at Wellington. The pupils of Standard Y. at the Temuka District High School, with whom their teacher, Mr J. Worthington, is very popular, presented that gentleman with a set of military brushes, with accompanying leather case. As none of the class were looking for limelight, they decided to place their gift on their teacher’s table in his momentary absence from the room, and so spring a pleasant surprise. Mr Worthington expressed his pleasure to-the class at this'quite unexpected evidence of their appreciation. Mr Henry Buckleton, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, has completed 50 years of service with that institution. He began as a junior, and he rose step by step until he was installed in the highest position within the bestowal of the Bank. To-day he is recognised throughout Australia and New Zealand and in London and New Yovk, as one of the leading bankers in the British Empire, even as the Bank itself, with a capital and reserve fund exceeding £10,500,000, occupies the leadingplace among the banks of the British dominions.
