FOOTBALL.

TEMUKA v. STAR. The first senior competition game - to be played in Temuka this season took place on Victoria Park oval on Sat in-day afternoon, when Temuka .met Star (Timaru). The weather conditions were extremely unfavourable, heavy showers falling intermittently during the afternoon, accompanied by a very cold Avind. A fair

nuinbe r of spectators braved the elc- :] meats and Avatched the game from the shelter of the grandstand. Under the circumstances a good exposition of the game of Rugby could hardly he expected. Nevertheless a strenuous contest between the opposing packs was fought out and at the call of time the margin of points iu favour of Temuka just about represented the difference between the two teams on the day. The game was very late in starting and when .Temuka kicked off Star had only nine men on the field, but subs"iquemly brought their number up to thirteen. Temuka Avere Avihout the services of their veteran skip-

per, Giis Spillane, and had to fill one or two otter positions with substitutes. Shortly after the kick off .the local forwards, wih Costello, Bennett and Woodley in the van, rushed I the ball to the Star line, where a/ force down eventuated. From the drop out Sta r rallied and a good deal

of interesting play took place in midfield. Larcombe and the Edgeler Bros, were conspicuous for some good saves, but clean handling and kicking were out. of the question, on account of the greasy state of the ball and ground. When the whistle sounded for half-time Star had the local men penned in their twentyfive, and the spell ended without a score, the advantage being slightly in favour of Star. On resuming, Temuka immediately rushed the game to their opponents' line. From some tight play in the corner Ben-

nett secured and got over but was brought, back for a knock-on. Immediately j-afterwairds A. Edgieler picked up and dashed over, drawing first blood. The kick at goal was disallowed for an infringement on Bennett's part. From jiow on Temuka held the upper hand and did most of the attacking, Woodley,

Jack and Bennett being conspicuous. From a loose rush Woodley picked up and made a good run. Although

added on the line, lie managed to

ground the ball between the posts. Larcombe added the major points, and tLlie game, ended, ■.•Temuka, S', Star 0. Mr D. Muh-jey was referee. * ZING A 111 v. WAIHI.

Zingari met Waihi on Athletic No. 2 Ground and scored a surprisingly easy win in what was practically a forward game throughout. Waihi, who were without the services of Mcßride the "rep" hooker, were no

match for the Zingari forwards and most of the game was played in the. Waihi 25. Naturally the ball was difficult to handle, and the ground gave the teams little chance of passing work. Early i n the first sppll McWhirer scored a try for Zingari. It was not enhanced. —Zingari 3, Waihi 0. Play went to Zingari's goal, but the Yellow's defence was too solid. Later McWhirter "dum-

mied" a pass, slipped in and scored. Gibb failed to convert. —Zingari 6, Waihi 0. For a time in the Sjelcond spell play hovered ©n tihe Waihi line. The Zingari forwards pressed hard, and Campbell scored, P. Ward fail-

ing to enhance. —Zingari 9, Waihi 0. Again Zingari followed up smartly, but offside relieved Waihi, who weiie hard pressed. Shortly afterwards Waihi came up strongly, Quirke getting in a valuable line kick. Then Henderson secured the ball and scored for Zingari. McWhirter failed to convert.—Zingari 12, Waihi 0. A spell of fairly fast play followed, Waihi forcing the pice. Following on a scrum on Waihi's goal line, P. Ward retired injured. A little later McWhirter scored again, but the try was not converted. The whistle blew with the scores— Zingari 15, Waihi 0. Mr J. IT. Grover was refereje:.
