THE MEAT POOL.
PRODUCERS' COMMITTEE AT
WORK. WELLINGTON, January 11. The committee set up by the producers' meeting yesterday to go into details of the scheme for establishing a compulsory meat pool has commenced its work. Discussions at the meeting of, the committee held to-day made it clear that everything necessary for complete organisation to deal with the pool's business on a sound commercial basis cannot be done at short notice, and meanwhile there will be no interference with current business whether on c.i.f. basis.or otherwise. This afternoon the committee met representatives of the freezing companies and informed them of the above decision. Certain improvements in the present methods were agreed to by the freezing companies and others suggested are being considered by them. QUESTIONS IN PARLIAMENT. WELLINGTON, January 12. In the House of Representatives, replying to Dr. Thacker (Christchurch East), Mr Massey said that he understood that the Committee set up to consider the meat pool had almost completed its work. He had inquired and had been informed that there would be no objection to two members of the Opposition being added to that committee, and he had no doubt that arrangements would be made accordingly. Replying to Mr R. McCallum (Wairau), Mr Massey said that if legislation was necessary in connection with the meat pool, provision would be mado to secure*a free local market for the producer. Further there was no intention of legislating in the direction of raising the price of meat to local consumers.
