MR HINES CHARGES.
THE NAMES OF THE ALLEGED
OFFENDERS
WELLINGTON, pet. 12. Tho committee to investigate Mr Hiniejs charges met this morning., Mr Hine formulated charges as follows y(1) That Charles, Edwin Major, while a member of Parliament, in sold to the Government the property of Frederick Bayley at Toko, afnd that ho received commission ; (2) that C, EMu. or'and Walter Symes, or one of them received commissions from Alfred - Bayley for selling property at Toko to the Government; . (3) that Waiter Symes in 1906 and 1908 charged and received from a number of West Coast lesseesof native lands, commissions or sums of money, for preparing and conducting petitions to Parliament on their behalf ; (4) that Walter Symes in 1906, while an election, was in: prospect in which Symes intended to become a .member, and being then a member, did threaten a certain newspaper i that he would use his influence as a member to prevent Government advertising from being given to the said newspaper unless he received its support or was treated to his own satisfaction by the said newspaper during the election contest ; (5) that Thomas Kennedy MacDonald, in or about 1004 and subsequent years, while a member of tln.‘ Legislati ve Council, either alone or with The partner, . a local agent cowl acted a sale to the Government of the property of John Motely Leigh at Narnai, and properties of other persons, and received from Leigh and yen dors of other properties commissions or other sums of money and divider the same ; (6) that Henare Kaihau, ii or about L 906, conducted a sale to the Government of a portion of the Tc akau block and received from the ven dors commission, or other sums o money. Mr Hine said also that ho had othe charges, of which he bad information but it was not easy to get persons b give evidence, so he did not think i fair to make specific allegations at pr Wilt, but he asked to bn allowed L (formulate such charts later if nccc; sasy. tM>c sent to each of the persona menLfc ti oned therein. c Sir J. G. Ward also moved that the 3 charges be referred to two judges of ’"the Supremo Court for investigation; and report. The committee decided to t adjourn till tolnuorrow morning to Sir J. G. Ward’* motion.
