Smith, claiming release! from water rate, as the premises owned by him had been vacated for over six months.—Half rate to be charged. Erom tradespeople in Geraldine, asking that October 12th (Labour Bay) bo declared a public holiday in lieu of the Thursday half holiday: in the same week.—Agreed to. Clerk to attend to. Erom tlic Health Department, setting forth the advantages under the new ilealth Act, of allowing the Hospital Board to act for the local authorities in tho mutter of public health.! It was the most eiiiclent and economic scheme yet devised, and they asked the Council to decide whether they would fall in with the idea, and if so, to appoint a delegate to attend a confer, ence of local bodies oa this matter.— Or. T. Sherratt said if Timuru and Wuimate were going into the scheme he would be in favour of it. On the motion of Or. J. Kennedy, seconded by Or. T. Sherratt, it was resolved—that if the whole of the local bodies concerned in South Canterbury agree to bear their share of tho burden this Council will not stand out against it. , - Erom the Crown Lunds Department, olVering a reserve at the junction of Wilson and Cox street for lease, of seven years at a minimum rental of £3.—.Received.

OVBESEEK’S KBPOKT.

The overseer reported on the work done during the 'month. The men had been employed during the month in trimming up the water race the whole distance. The willow roots were a constant nuisance, and the wind was also troublesome by breaking willows and blowing them into the race. He luuh the gorsto fence cut along the roud by Maitland's paddock, and trimmed the gorse off‘ the cutting on Waihi Terrace and • Macdonald Street. He had cleaned the street channels several times in the mouth. The horse and 1 dray were used in repairing with shingle ’several weak places in the main struct, also in Peel Street and Jollic Street. The gas light had been satisfactory during the month. The lease of T.S. 1114 would expire on November oth, and it would bo necessary to take tbe usual steps to relet it. Receipts si nob last meeting were ’—Gas Cl 4 11s 9d, water i£ls 10s lOd, rents i’s His, sanitary £3 8s Gd, total £■69 1 Is Id., T.S. 260 lease would expire on December Ist, and should be dealt with soon.—T. Herlihy, clerk and overseer. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr. T. Sherratt, seconded by Or. Kennedy, that the usual steps be taken to re-let the sections referred to' for a term of 11 years, on renewable leases; the same to be offered at auction, tbe unset to be' £l in each case.

THE CLERK’S SALARY.

It was unanimously resolved that In consequence of the extra work imposed upon the clerk his salary bo increased by £l6 from October Ist inst., making the amount £l'so a year.

STREET LIGHTING.

The overseer reported on Mr G. B. Creemer’e application for a street lamp on the road near his property. For an installation with an inch pipe it would cost £2O, and tire annual cost for lighting and upkeep, would be r,2 ss. Nine chains of inch pipes would cost £9 ISs, IJ-inch £ll 17s, 4-inch £l7 2b Gd, labour £5, and lamp post £5. There would only be one possible private consumer in the locality. .It was left with the lighting committee to visi t the plate and take the matter into consideration with aoy general scheme of lighting extension for next, winter, and report at next meeting. GENERAL RATE. Ii accordance with notice of motion Cr. T. Sherratt .moved and Cr. Kcni: nedy, seconded —‘‘That a .general rate of Id in the £ be struck, for the ensuing year.,’ ’ —Carried. PAY, SHEET. A(counts amounting to £lll Os 2d were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated.
