The spirit resolution was carried by 213 votes to 126 votes, the Nationalists and Scotch* members strongly opposing the increase. , Mr Lloyd George, the Chancellor, m justifying the cautious estimate ol Itha vieldi alleged that the trade might add water, otherwise the publican® profit by the new duties would be £4,000,000, sg that they had no cause for complaint. Mr Balfour dwelt on the inconsistency of attempting to crush a trade that was presenting £4,000,000 in the following spring. “ Mr J. E. Hope proposed a Jo per cent, preference on Imperial grown tobacco in the interests of India and South Africa. The motion was rejected by Ibo votes to 57 votes.
