The Government will hand the local committee £SOO, towards the cost of lunch for the men of the American fleet during the week. The Govern- - inent intend to illuminate the Government Buildings! Auckland, utilising the fittings, used on the occasion of the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales. The Mayor invites a'H persons having accommodation for visitors during fleet week,, to communicate with the local bureau established for the purpose. ... LONDON, June Tl., The New York correspondent of the Dalijy | Mail ' reports that more than 1000 deserters have left the American fleet since it arrived in Californian waters. Owing to the superabundance of the hospitality the sailors' arc dissatisfied with life on board the’ 1 ships.
AN OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
.AUCKLANI, June 11. The following is the. official programme so far arranged by the Government commissioners and local reception committee for the entertainment of the American fleet; —Sunday, August 9—Official visit of Admiral to Governor ; Monday, August 10—Landing and official reception at wharf by Prime Minister and members of the Ministry, when the Admiral will be presented with, a souvenir of the 'visit from the people of New Zealand for transmission to President Roosevelt, a souvenir will also be presented to the Admiral, a procession will then be Formed to the Military Hall where the Mayor will present addresses of welcome, in the afternoon there will bo a review of troops, and in the evening an official banquet ; Tuesday, August 11—Mayoral reception ; State ball at night ; Wednesday, August 12— Races at Ellerslie, departure at 3 p.m. of officers of the fleet for Rotorua ; Thursday, August 13 —Visits to thermal sights ; Friday, 'August Tl— Return to Auckland: Saturday, August I's—Left open. 6 In addition to the above programme the Mayor will, at the conclusion of the psoeessionl o a Monday entertain/ the principal officers at lunch at his private residence and arrangements are Ix'ing made to provide for the remainder.
The Mayor of Tcmuka, Mk T. Buxton, has received the following telegram from the Prime Minister ;■—“His Worship the Mayor, Temuka. ’ In, connection with the! visit of the ’American Fleet, shall be glad to know if your city is willing to contribute a- flag or banner for exhibition in Auckland diking the week the fleet is there, the banner to bear the words 'Welcome from,” with the name of the town contributing it. Tlib idea is to show that a cordial welcome from every ptart. (of New Zealand is extended to the visitors. I shall be pleased to hoar from you as early as possible, whether you can sec your way to fail in with the proposal. Kindly reply collejct. I am telegraphing to ail • cities and boroughs throughout tho dominion to the same effect.—J. G. Ward.”
