Hare MaU'iiga, the East Coast Native, who is living in a state of outlawry, last week committed two fresh robberies, one at Willis', at iluerua, and the other at Wayan's hush camp, stores having been taken in each ease. Itis getting\liHicult to obtain bushmen lo go out to camp, owing to the\ frequent depredations..

A petition from settlors in live Orari district, requesting that Mr Smart should bo allowed to remain in charge of the Orari railway station, instead of being transferred to Culverden, "as was recently forwarded through Mr Flat man, M.H.R., to the Acting Minister for Railways. To this Mr i hitman has received the following reply Head Cilice, Wellington, 27th July, 1906. Sir,—With reference to your letter of the 18th inst., covering petition from settlers da the Orari district, in which it is requested that Mr Smart, statianmnstcr at Orari, should bo i allowed to remain in charge of that station insteudof being removed to Culverden, 1 have the honor to inform you that I am very much gratified to find that the manner in which Mr Smart has conducted the business of the Department at Orari Station was generally approved by the settlers in the district. I regret, however, that the exigencies of the Department necessitate his removal to Culverden, and that after giving the matter careful consideration I cannot sec my way to comply with the reqaiosi of the petitioners. Culvterclcn is a very important station. and the removal will ultimately be to Mr .Smart’s own interests, and I .eel sure that after the eulogistic references that have been made those signing the petition would he the last persons to desire to stand in the way of Mr Smart’s attaining success in. the Department.—l have, etc. ALBERT PITT, Acting Minister for Railways.
