New Year’s Eve at Temuka.

New Year’s Eve passed quietly in Temuka, until just prior to the departure of Captain Hayhnrst and his men. The feelings of the people then evidently wanted a vent, for almost directly niter tea the streets were thronged, quite an unusual number of country people coming in. The stores did good business, and the hotels appeared crowded. The Temuka Brass Baud played for a while prior to leaving for the country, theirplaying giving much pleasure. At the Wesleyan Church and St. Peters’ church there wore the usual watch-night services, the attendance at each being good. During the early hours of Monday morning there was a lot of larrikinism indulged im The street in one place was blocked with packing cases, crossings over culverts were lifted, gates removed from their bingos, traps overturned, and so forth. Not least among the jokes (!) was the removal of a medical practitioners’ sign and its re-fixing on a hotel door with the addition of the words “ slaughter-house ” beneath. Although there was a good deal of larrikinism there was little drnnkennes, and no personal insults were offered to the public, so far as we know. The Original Brass Baud went to Geraldine on Saturday evening, and played through the main street. They received a generous share of support. On' New Year’s Eve they toured Kangatira Yalley and Kakahn, returning through Winchester. The band was well received everywhere, and their funds have been augmented to a fair extent, which will enable them to purchase new music and instruments.
