TENNIS.

The Temuka Tennis Club hell their formal opening of tbe season at their courts, Victoria Park, Temuka. Considering the extremely unsatisfactory state of the weather —a howl’ugnor’-weater blowing all day—there was a splendid attendance of members of the local club, their number being augmented by Messrs Feildon, Orr, Pierce, and Halley, of the Upper Waitohi Club, and Misses McOaskill (2) and Lena Gaze, of the Victoria Park Club. The courts were in splendid order, but the wind would not permit of inter-club matches being played, the games being solely friendly ones. Delicious afternoon tea was provided by ladies of the committee — Mrs Untten (assisted by Misses Mendelson (2), Miss Nantes, and Miss Brown, and was liberally dispensed by members of the Temuka Club. During the afternoon a large number of enthusiasts of the game put in an appearance, and watched the various sets with interest, The Victoria Park Chib open the season this afternoon, and a large gathering is expected, if the weather is propitious. Also that als tournament be got up at an early date, —about January. This it was thought would add much to the interest of the games. Mr G. C. Hamilton proposed as a recommendation to the committee that one of the courts be covered lyith a coating of sand and tar. Mr H. '-1. Srqitfi proposed that-if this were dene the court be covered over in winter, say with gorse, to guard against probable danger from frost.
