A 20th CENTURY MEMORIAL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—ln less than six months from now a new century will be ushered in, and it is fitting to consider whether the people of South Canterbury are willing to mark its advent by a prominent In Memoriam celebration. As memorials of the Queen’s Jubilee, for instance, monoliths or other monuments have been erected in some of our parts; and it is surely quite is fitting that the opening of the 20th Century should be marked by something at least equally permanent. If such a celebration is to take place, it would be as well to remember that it is possible, as was pointed o t two thousand years ago, to erect monuments more lasting than arc thoso of st'me or bronze. The establishment of a 20th Century Scholarship, open to the children of a certain age attending any public or private school in South Canterbury, and entitling the holder to secondary education, would be a monument of this description. There would cot be much difficulty in raising funds sufficient to yield an annual income for this purpose. There are 67 public schools and several Catholic Schools in South Canterbury. If each of these were to hold either one or two entertainments, and devote the proceeds to this object, a very considerable sura of money weald be the result. Possibly this could be added to in other ways. I would suggest that the S.C. Educational Institute take the matter into consideration, and, if it meets with the approval of the members, a strong committee be organised, and the various school committees be asked to co-operate. I have, of course, here, made only the merest suggestion. If the matter is taken up, as it c rtainly should be, no doubt a proper scheme of working will be adopted, and the necessary details arranged.—l am. etc , T. CIIEYNE FABNIE. Temuka, 21st July, 1899.
