GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above board was held on Tuesday night. Present— Messrs A. White (chairman), R. Taylor, W. S. Maslin, J. J. McUaskoy, and Cl. Ward. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was received and dealt with as under : Prom Messrs VY. A. fffierratt Co., applying for permission to erect a verandah in front of their shop and office in Talbot street. —Granted. Prom Mr R. Hughes, asking information as to whether it is legal for bicycles or wheelbarrows to be run upon footpaths in the town.—The attention of the police to be called to by-law A, section 11, and that stops be taken to abate the nuisance. WATER RACE. Mr Ward reported that owing to the ' race running to his place being dammed up by property owners, through whoso land the water ran, he was unable to get water through the race.—The chairman to see the property owners in question. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee reported that Mr T. Bowkett’s application was bona lido re having his wife’s name placed on the rate roll for section 255, and recommend that same be granted.—Re the application from the Mechanics’ Institute, it was found that the total receipts of the library were about £lO per annum, and the institute could not be carried on under a revenue of at least £2O per annum. The committee were of opinion that instead of the board taking over the institute it would be more advantageous to make it a grant of a sum of money, whatever the board might agree to; to put the building in repair; or to call a public meeting to discuss the best means of carrying on the

iuatitute with any chance of success.—The report was adopted, and it was agreed that a public meeting should be called as suggested.

EIRE BRIGADE. Captain Brown and Lieutenant Kraus writed on the board, urging that the account of 10a for the payment of two men for taking charge of the remains of the recent fire at Dunlop & Co.’s after the brigade had loft, be paid. The brigade badly wanted a new suction hose, new ladders, and the sumps required rings on them or something to lift them with. The board’s annual grant was not sufficient to meet all requirements.—Resolved—“That the annual grant of £ls to the brigade be passed for payment, and also the 10s, account rendered.” overseer’s report. The overseer reported : I have been employed most of the time in cleaning out water channels and culverts in the several streets named : Waihi terrace, Pino street, Jolly street, Peel street, Wilson street, High street, branch water race, and part of the main

street at the lower end of the town. 1 should like the works committee to have a look at this watertable; it is getting so very deep. I have also been carting the material that came from the watertables to the riverbed and several other places. I also repaire the footpath at the concrete culvert in Jolly street by building a sod wall, and made the footpath the full width, the embankment being worn away by people getting in the bush making a dangerous hole in the footpath. Ordered by the board to make a box culvert and fix it in the watertable near Mr T. Sherratt’s store, with a load or two of gravel for an approach to it—that has been attended to ; also ordered by the board to get a notice-board painted notifying that steam engines be not allowed to cross the cemetery road bridge, and to fix up same —this has been attended to. Me Camp bell’s being the lowest tender, viz., 13s, it was accepted. I have also been cleaning out the main water race and the sumps at the lower end of the town, from the Bush Hotel to the tail end of the race, and found the culvert at Mr Howard’s gateway entirely choked up with willow roots. I have also cleaned out a few landslips near the head of the race, between the upper flume and the sluice. Mr Maloney has finished his contract in re pairing the asphalt footpaths to my satisfaction, but as there was a crossing at the co-operative store wanted repairing, and it was no use repairing it without a broken metal foundation, as some very heavy waggons have to cross it, I mentioned the matter to the chairman and Mr Taylor, who authorised the work to be done. I have had same attended to, with six inches in depth of well-tarred broken metal and one inch of fine asphalt on the top. His charge for doing the work is £1 4s Gd, Nightsoil fees: Out of the 12 names drawn 8 have paid, and there are 2 willing to pay and 2 not willing to. Dogs; Eight have been registered, and there is only one left, which should be registered in a few days. I have had Mr Lord 15 days and 4 hours, and Mr Crafer 3 days and 6 hours with horse and dray.—l have, etc., “R. Annan, “ Overseer.”

FIREWOOD. Resolved rendered to the Geraldine County Council for firewood used in tho office. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £3l 18a 3d were passed for payment. The board then rose.
