A fatal case of anthrax is reported from Cowra, where Mr D. Mclnuos, who contracted tho disease through a fly bito, has died. Michael Wallace, aged 74 years, died at Bathurst of apoplexy last week. He ' came to the colony as a soldier, and was guard over convicts iu Norfolk island, in Van Dieman’s Laud aud on tho Blue Mountains. Later ho was warder iu various gaols of tho colony. A disastrousfirebrokeoutats,3o o’clock on Wednesday morning iu the hosoital at Barcaldiue, Queensland, which was totally destroyed. The fire originated under the floor of the kithchou, and would have been easily put out had water boon available. There wore about 12 patients iu tho hospital at the time, and they wore rescued. Tho forco of tho wind accelerated tho firo. Tho insurances total £ISOO, £IOOO being in tho South British and £SOO in tho Now Zealand Company. The Emperor of Germany has scut out a Commission to inquire into the mining resources of Australia. West Australia has already been visited, aud tho members of the Commission, Mr Carl Schmeisser and Dr Vogelsang, have waited on the Victorian Minister of Mines to obtain information with regard to Victoria. Mr Foster furnished tho Commission with plans aud reports, and they promised on returning to Germany to keep the department informed as to scientific developments with respect to tho treatment of ores. Tho Commissioners will visit the principal goldfields in the colony, and will afterwards proceed to New Zealand.
