TEMUKA V. PLEASANT POINT CRICKET MATCH.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As umpire in the cricket match Temuka v. Pleasant Point, reported in Saturday’s issue of your paper, permit me to say that the gross misrepresentations indulged in by your reporter are not easily accounted for. Evidently the “cream puff” about which he had such clap-trap or something stronger than tea, not procurable on tho ground, “ went to his head ” and made him see things in the style of Tam o’ Shanter. The match was played on a very fair wicket, without either “ hollows, ridges, or stones,” the only “ peculiarity ” being that the pitch was level ground. The Temuka team, although weak as to'uumbers, was a strong one, containing at least four first eleven men, and was beaten in every department of the game. Fanthorpe was' the only man who did anything either as batsman or bowler. “ Tho most unkindest cut of all ” to such as would agree with your reporter was that they were beaten by an innings and thirty-three runs. lam informed by the Point team that they would bo prepared to play tho same team at Temuka on any ground, and they think they can beat them as in the first m<.tch. As an onlooker let me embody my criticism of tho Temuka team in the following statements : 1. Put on less “frill” and more “real cricket form.” 2. Own up when fairly beaten, and take your beating like a man—not like a schoolboy. I am, etc., F. White, Umpire Temuka v. P. Point Cricket Match. Pleasant Point, February 17tb, 1890.
