At the Christchurch Magistrates Court George Miller, a former member of the Fire Brigade, was charged with the larceny of ten pairs of trousers, the property of the brigado He was remauded to Friday, bail being allowed. TwoDevenpo t residents named Verran charged with breach of the Gaming and Lotteries Act by disposing of a horse, saddle, aud bridle, by deciding the winner by means of dice, were fined £l and coßta. A grocery store occupied by Mrs Conway, Morningaide, Auckland, has been burned down—loss £3OO, —caused by the explosion of a kerosene lamp. A miner named Arthur Darnley was killed at Auckland while he was working out a pillar of coal. A large piece of the roof fell upon him, causing instantaneous death. Deceased leaves a wife and child residing in Sydney. Mr \Toseph Payton, proprietor of the Wairarapa Daily Times, has been served with a writ for alleged libel, for which five Masterton publicans claim £2OO each as damages. The action arises out of comments in the Wairarapa Times on the recent agitation regarding the efficiency of the local police force.
