THE ARREST OF IRISH M.P.S.
(Per Sen Fraoci»co Mail.) Mr John Dillon was arrested on September 18th at bis residence, near Dublin, William O’Brien at Glengariff* and warrants have been issued the arrest of Messrs Sheedj and Condon, M.P.’s, Mr Patrick o‘Brien, and the Eey. David Humphrey, Tipperary. Dillon and O’Brien were arrested on charges of conspiracy and inciting tenants on Smith Barry’s estates not to pay rents. O’Brien was taken to Cork and Dillon to Dublin, In addition to the warrants issued one was also taken ©at far a man named Dalton, who had been active in the work of the Land League. Tjjere is a general feeling of profound surprise that in making these arrests the Government had kept its secret so well. No hint of their intended action had reached the public, and no (explanation or reason of the arrests was vouchsafed. O’Brien and Dillon’s plans for an American tour to raise funds were spoiled. They were put under heavy bail to appear for trial in the middle ©f Oetober. The Irish party . regard the whole movement as a deliberate one on the part of Balfour to cut off the American money supplies for tbs agitation.
