MR BADHAM'S RETRENCHMENT.

TO THE EDITOR, Sib,—-I fear I shall bo compelled to discontinue taking your valuable paper, and after mature consideration I have thought it would be only right on my part to inform you of the reasons of my taking such an important step. These reasons are three in number, viz,;—

Firstly; You, Mr Editor, reduced my salary a few months ago as postmaster, from £SOOO to £5, and now the would-be hon. member for Heathcote-Halswell has reduced the salary from £5 to nothing per annum, and by using his benign influence has increased ear taxes £lO per annum, shut up Bulmer postoflß.ee, and vented his spleen. becondly: Aa the time is approaching for the new elections,,! get rather tired of seeing in your valuable paper the same names of only two gentlemen in New Zealand who are entitled to be called the saviours ot the country —that is, Mr Ballance and Mr J. M., the bank schemer.

Thirdly: That to be in the fashion I have joined the union, and one of our many rules is that we are not allowed to spend sixpence without we get an equivalent. (I hope you wont take this as personal, but I really have not time to explain fully the meaning of my third reason.) You will thus see, Mr Editor, that in consequence of loss of salary, increase of taxes, and other reasons, that I shall be compelled to curtail some of my luxuries, and amongst them, I am sorry to say, will be your valuable paper, unless you can see your way to act in the liberal spirit of the Canterbury bakers—that is, to charge the same price for tick as you do for cash, and when I pay to make a most liberal discount. —I am, etc., E. W. BxpHAXf.
