THE TONGAN DISPUTE.
Sydney, Fb». 6. Sir J. B. Thruston has written to the Wealeyun Conference, enclosing some lively and interesting correspondence between himself and the Rev. Shirley Baker, over the Tongan disdute. He says that the charges in Mr Baket'a Blue B.iok are Dot founded on fact, or oven upon circumstances which would acquit the author on the ground of honest misconception. sir John adds that with the assistance of Admirnl Scott he hopes to he able to visit Tonga and may be SDCcessful in inducing King George to extend to ail his subjets the fullest religious freedom. In a letter d*ted Auckland, January 7th, the High Commissioner declined to hold any intercourse with Mr Baker until he made reparation for his calumnies against the Vice Consul (Mr Symonds). Mr B k«r replied next day, withdrawing the charges against Mr Symonds fully and apologising for publishing them. The Australasian Conference passed a resolution soliciting Sir J. B. Thruaton to remove the existing disabilities and return to their home exiles in Fiji and Apti.
