Clbahins Sale.— Attention is directed to an important sale, by Messrs Gracie, Maclean and Co., at the Arowhenua Hotel on Friday next.

Flax Fibre.—The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce have decided to communicate with other Chambers to endeavour to secure a uniform standard of quality tor flax fibre exported from the colony.

Saltation Abmy, Qebaldinb.—A "Great Indescribable Meeting" in connection with the Salvation Army will be held in the Oddfellowß' Hall, Geraldine, to-morrow night, and Mrs Hammond in command. All are invited.

Salh at Geraldine.—The fortniahtly sale of stock, etc., at Geraldine takes place t®-morrow. Entries of sheep, cattle, pigs, reapers and binders, etc., are advertised by Messrs J. Mundell and Co. and Messrs H. B. Webster and 00.

Ball at Gehaldinb.—A ball will be'held in the Oddfellows' flail, Gersldine, on Thursday evening nest;. Chess Tournament.—The chess tournament at Dunedin concluded on Saturday, Mr Hookham, of Christchurcb, proviDg the champion. Of the five games he played he won four and drew one.

Gaze for the occupation of Reserve 1846, Arowhenua, was accepted. The Chief Commissioner reported that about 33 aeres of Crown Land, near Peel Forest, had been cropped by the holder of the adjoining land. The board ordered that proceedings should be taken against the party unless he paid for the use of tha land which had been cropped Fate o* Mr J. Clakke.-Oo Saturday afternoon last two shildren named Di.lojk whi* playing on the sea beach, near Bloody Jack's Point, to the south of limaru, found an almost now watertight boot, which on examination was found to contain a human foot eacaasd in a dark grey ribbed noollen sock. The foot had been severed at the ankle, and the flesh was quit- white. The whole were taken to the Lunaru police station. The boot is a right foot one, is strong and almost new; has heel and foe plates; laas two rows of nails along each edge, and three rows of nails in the centre, and looks as if it had been in the water for a long time It was thought tha foot was part of the remains of James Clarke, pUtolayer, Makikihi, who suddenly disappeared from home about three or four months ago, and about whom nothing had since bsen heard. Festerday Detective Neil brought the boot and sock from Timara to Temuka, where Mrs Ciarke is now living, and she at once identihed them as belonging to her unhusband. This sets at rest all speculates as to Mr Clarke's fate, but how he got into;tha sea will of course remain a mystery.
