The total number attending the Exhibition on Thursday was 8162, of which 1549 paid at the turnstiles. An ordinary fire assay of quartz taken by Hobbs from Puhipuhi has been made at Auckland and has yielded 58 ozs of silver and 16 dwts of gold to the ton. Mr Gt-albraitb, who made the assay, said that this sample has evidently come from the same source as the first sample which made such good result.
The Friendly Societies in Wanganui are strongly protesting against the introduction of the Eailway Employes Bill and Have appointed a viligance committee to look after their interests. The steamers Orowaiti and Eotorua collided during a thick fog off the Kaikouras, at a quarter to three on Saturday iuorning. The Eotorua’s injuries are on the starboard side. Her bows were cut down from the decking to near the waterline, a depth of 18 feet, through four plates. The Orowaiti’s port bow is the more seriously injured. She was in light trim, and all injuries are well above the water-line. Plates on the port side 'are rent away from the deck to 4 or 5 feet from the bow, while the plates and beams are started for about 12 feet. The fore-topmast was carried away. Ho serious personal injuries occurred, but a fireman was severely shaken and bad his shoulder hurt. 1 The well known Abbotsford estate at Taieri was sold by auction in lots at Dunedin on Friday, by Messrs Wright, jStephenson and Co. Lot 1, 20 acres, realised £2B 5s per acre ; lot 2, the same area, £25; lot 3, 52 acres, £3O. The homestead block, 341 acres, realised £24 per acre, 150 acres in pats, next to it, fetching £26. The other lots were passed in at £24 per acre.
Mr John Dillon addressed a meeting at Oamaru on Saturday night on the subject of Home Eule, Addresses were presented from the ladies and the reception committee, and at the conclusion ot the address a resolution sympathising with Home Eule was carried unanimously.
