RETRENCHMENT.
The following expenses paid to members of the Education Board, Dunedin, during the last three years ending 10th July last, shows one direction in which the money goes:— Mr Fraer, £133 4s; William Elder, £8 Is; James Greea, £B6 Is 4d H. Clark, £9O 3s lid; J. Mackenzie, £SO 9s; Dr McGregor, £SB ss; total, £426 4s Bd. Mr Saunders, M.H.R., one of the members of the. Canterbury Education Board, received £l7l 16s, This is a question requiring the immediate attention of the public. It is known how careless and useless most of the members are when the Estimates are before Parliament, and how well they are furnished with Nelson’s blind eye when it suits their convenience. It rests solely with the electors at the ensuing election to send men of sterling honesty in all their dealings to be their representatives, not shoddy men with over-' drafts in the Bank of New Zealand, which unfortunately has ruled the colony for many years, to the verge af bankruptcy, or members sitting on a rail vainly expecting to be AttorneyGeneral, or any candidate having the Chief Justiceship in view. These are the men who should be ignored, also all professional and ~ carpet-bag schemers of politicians. Let the electors be true to themselves, and they need not fear the result. Lieutenant-Colonel Roberts, of the Defence Force, whose salary was £SOO a year, received £835 16s lOd compensation on being discharged, and immediately thereafter appointed Resident Magistrate at Wairarapa at a salary ®f £350 a year. Major Gascoyne’s, Defence Department, salary was £250 yearly, who retired on compensation of £4Ol 4s 9d, and was afterwards appointed defence storekeeper, Auckland, at a salary of £2OO per annum. These are samples of our glorious system of Government retrenchment.—Exchange,
