SMALLPOX IN AUSTRALIA.
Stdnky, Jan. 3. The Board of Health reports that of the Preussen's passengers in quarantine there are 40 pronounced cases of smallpox, two being of a dangerous character ; also 80 suspected cases. One of the engineers of the Preussen is missing. He is believed to have escaped when the vessel was at Melbourne. Jan. 4. Ten fresh casps of smallpox are reported in quarantine, making in all 50 well-defined cases in various stages. Later.

The smallpox among the passengers quarantine is increasing. Altogether there are 19 cases among the steerage passengers. The other classes are free. Rigid isolation is being enforced. Jan. 4.
A reward has been offered for the •mat of the engineer of the Preussen. He is stated to have been seen in various places at Melbourne, Adelaide, Jan. 8. Another case of smallpox is reported at the quarantine ground. Wellington, Jan. 4.
lhe Governm»nt have been communicating with thp South Australian, Victorian, and New South Wales Governments concerning the outbreak of smallpox on board the Preussen, and have received received replies from South Australia and Victoria stating that every precaution bad been taken and the mails thoroughly fumigated. The reply from New South Wales is expected tomorrow, after the receipt of which a meeting of the general Board of Health of the colony will be held to consider what steps are necessary to be taken to prevent the introduction of the dreaded disease into the colony.
