Stdnky, Dec. 30. A in iking was held last night at the Tow n H*U in favor of granting a reprieve to the Mount Rennie convicts. It was by no means influential or representative in character. Five men were arrested at Tarn worth yesterday charged with assault on a girl under sixteen.

Charles Augustus Prnythe Wood, b merchant in Brunswi<k, and a Wesleyan local preacher, has been arrested on a charge of obtaining over £3OOO by fraud. A sensation was caused in Horsham on Dec. 23 by the attempted murder of a woman. A man named Clark, working at Stephens' brewery, when going borne from work in the evening, found Mary Marqnardt, who was living with him as his wife, lying on a bed, with tremendous wounds on the head and body. The woman's daughter, Mary, aged 16, was dressing the wounds, and that she did not know how they had occurred. She had been up torn, and on returning found her mother lying on the floor weltering in her blood. Information was given to the police, and when further questioned the girl stuck to her tale. From her appearance, however, suspicion fell on her, and she confessed she committed the deed. She stated she hit her mother several times on the bead with an axe. She was arrested, and she now states that she is enciente by a man whose name she told to the.police. The injured woman is in great danger of her life.
