About two o'clock yesterday moriine: a two-storey wooden block of buildings in Symonds street, Auckland, consistiogof two shops and dwelling bouses, were burnt to the ground. The fire originated in the shop occupied by Mr John McCarroll, linen draper, spreadiog to that of J. Speddi»g, woollen draper. All the inmates, including three little children, escaped in safety. The total damage amounted to over £ISOO, very little being 'saved. The building was insured for £6OO in the South British, and McCarroll's Btock for £2OO in the Norwich Union.

The barque Helen Denny, from Glasgow, 98 days out, arrived at Auckland yeßserday. Her cargo includes 11,550 gallons of spirits. On the voyage she encountered Tory heavy weather, but sustained no damages.—The barque Lutterworth sailed from Auckland, yesterday, for London, with a cargo valued at £18,344, chiefly kauri gum. Mr G. F. Sherwood, of Auckland, who recently went to Samoa in connection with laad claims and who returned by the mail steamer Mararoa, was under arrest on board the American man-of-war Mohican. He was arrested by a party of blue jackets, while on board the steamer Explorer, at the instance of the American Consul, Greenbaum. He has complained on the subject of bis arrest to the Eoglish Government, and leaves for London shortly to prosecute a claim for damages against the United States Government.
