COMMERCIAL.
CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE. The Corn Exchange reports for the week ending Friday evening, the 27th August ;~ Farm work is completely at a standstill owing to the continued inclemency of the weather. Spring sowing will hi very late, and the acreage in wheat is 's now. almost sure to be less than was originally expected, as many of the low, land famers will have to resort to barley or oats where they had intended to sow Tuscan. Grass seed and clover season is also very, backward. Wheat has a brisk business, and last week’s prices are well maintained. Tuscan is firm at 4s as also is pearl, which is more scare than other kinds. Hunter’s sells readily in large parcels at 4s 2d to 4s 3d; second quality lines find outlets at 2d a bushel.less than the above ; chick wheat freely brings 3a 7d to 3s 3d. • Oats are ofiVring more plentifully, and transactions have been heavy. Mill'ng are lightly held at |s fid j short feed have been sold in quantities at 2s 3d to 2a and long Danish and Tartars at 2s Id to ar^a.
Barley (with the exception of feed) is very dull, and without alteration in values, ‘ , Rf-una and peas have had an occasional enquiry, and are held, by a few who hold out for 5d to 3s 6d for beans and fe**d peas, and 4s 31 to 4s 6d for blue, true to name and fit for seed. Grass seeds’have had a quiet , week. Machine-dressed seed moves away,.slowly at 5s 3d to 5s 9d, Banners’ lots sell at 3s 91 to 4s 6d.' Cocksfoot-Heavy clean seed is wanted at 4jd to 4fd. . , ■ Potatoes—The market is languid. A few transactions' have taken on • the basis of 42s 6d to 45s at country stations. Dairy produce remains at last week’s quotations, with little business doing. The above prices (potatoes excepted) are for delivery f.o.b. .Lyttelton.
